Pulse
A four-mode rhythm comprehension tool. Travel from a single pulse to odd meters via story-driven Reveal screens, a free Explore sandbox, and a Practice game that asks you to name the meter by ear.
How to use Pulse
- Open Pulse and pick a mode — Reveal walks you through nine short screens; Explore is a free sandbox; Practice quizzes your ear.
- In Reveal, press play on each screen and follow the wheel. The story moves from a single pulse to odd meters like 7/8 and 9/8.
- In Explore, switch between eight time signatures, ride the tempo from 40 to 200 BPM, and toggle subdivisions and accents.
- In Practice, pick a tier, listen to a rhythm, and pick the meter. Stats and mastery persist locally.
- Use the Recap screen at the end of Reveal to jump straight into Explore or Practice.
Frequently asked questions
- What is a time signature?
- Two numbers stacked at the start of a piece. The top says how many beats fit inside one bar; the bottom says what kind of note gets one beat. Together they shape the feel of the music.
- Why are 3/4 and 6/8 different if they have the same number of ticks?
- Because the accents fall in different places. 3/4 groups six eighths as three twos (a waltz); 6/8 groups them as two threes (a jig). Same notes, totally different feel — that's the whole secret of meter.
- Do I need any music theory to use this?
- No. Pulse starts from a single heartbeat-like pulse and builds up through songs you already know — Twinkle, Take Five, Money. Vocabulary arrives after the feel.
