How to find your Sa

Your shruti is not a fact about your voice. It is a decision you make once, then check.

The short answer

To find your Sa, hum the lowest note you can hold steadily without strain, then count up five semitones — that is usually a comfortable Sa. Most adult male voices settle between C and D; most adult female voices between F and A. Play a tanpura at that pitch and sing a plain descending phrase. If the bottom feels forced, move up a semitone.

Sa is a decision, not a discovery

Western music fixes A above middle C at 440 Hz and builds everything from there. Indian classical music does not. Sa is wherever you put it, and every other note in the raga is measured from that point.

This is why the question is not what note is my Sa? but which Sa can I live at? You are not detecting a fact about your body. You are choosing a pitch that will hold a two-octave raga comfortably for the length of a practice session, and then committing to it long enough for your ear to learn it.

A well-chosen Sa makes the bottom of the raga reachable without pushing and the top reachable without shouting. A badly chosen one makes you sound thin at one end and strained at the other, and — worse — it teaches your ear the wrong intervals, because you will start compensating for pitches you cannot actually produce.

The five-semitone method

Most ragas ask you to go about a fourth below Sa and a full octave above it. In Carnatic terms that is mandra Pa up to tara Sa, and often a note or two beyond. So the working rule is simple: find your floor, then move up far enough that the floor is still in reach.

  1. 01Hum down to the lowest note you can hold steadily for four full seconds. Not the lowest note you can produce — the lowest one that stays even and does not rattle.
  2. 02Count up five semitones from there. That is your candidate Sa. The note you started on is now your mandra Pa, and it should feel like a comfortable floor rather than a cliff.
  3. 03Play a drone at the candidate pitch and sing a plain descending phrase — S N D P — down to that floor. If the last note collapses or goes breathy, move the whole thing up a semitone and try again.
  4. 04Now go the other way. Sing up to tara Sa and hold it. If you are lifting your chin or going sharp to get there, come down a semitone.
  5. 05Sit at the surviving pitch for ten minutes of ordinary practice. Comfort at ten minutes is a different measurement from comfort at ten seconds, and it is the one that matters.

Where voices usually land

These are starting points, not prescriptions. A trained voice can sit outside its conventional band; an untrained one often should not. Use the table to pick a first candidate, then test it with the method above.

Kattai numbering is the shorthand you will hear in a Carnatic class or from an accompanist: 1 kattai is C, and each whole number climbs to the next white key.

The gap between the male and female bands is roughly a fourth to a fifth, not an octave. This surprises people who expect the difference to be larger, and it is why a mixed class usually cannot share one drone.

Testing it properly

A tuner will tell you which note you sang. It will not tell you whether you can stay there, which is the actual question. Test against a drone, and test with real material.

  • Sing a phrase you know cold. A varnam opening, a familiar geetham, the first line of any song. New material makes you concentrate on the notes instead of on how your throat feels.
  • Test at the end of a session, not the start. A warm voice sits higher than a cold one. A Sa chosen when fresh can be punishing forty minutes later.
  • Check the passing notes, not just the extremes. If M or P in the middle of the range feels like it needs a push, the problem is usually the Sa rather than the note.
  • Record thirty seconds and listen back. The voice you hear inside your head is not the voice in the room, and strain is far more audible on playback.

Signs your Sa is wrong

The failure modes are distinct enough to diagnose by ear. If more than one row here describes your practice, change the pitch before changing anything else.

When to change it, and when not to

Your Sa is not permanent, but it should be stable. The value of a fixed Sa is that your ear stops converting and starts recognising: after a few months at one pitch, you hear G3 as a colour rather than as an interval you calculate. Moving the Sa every week destroys that.

Good reasons to move it

  • Your voice has changed — training, age, or adolescence.
  • You are singing with an instrument fixed to another pitch.
  • You are recovering from illness and need a temporary, lower home.
  • A specific raga sits badly, and only for that piece.

Bad reasons to move it

  • A single phrase is hard. Practise the phrase.
  • Someone you admire sings at a different pitch. Their body, not yours.
  • You want a brighter recording. That is a microphone problem.

Write it down

The last step is the one most people skip. Once you have a Sa that survives a full session, record it somewhere you will find it again — the note name, the kattai number, and the date you settled on it. Every accompanist you ever work with will ask, and “around G, I think” costs everyone five minutes at the start of a rehearsal.

Then set a drone to it and leave it running while you practise. The point of the tanpura is not accompaniment; it is a continuous reference that stops your pitch drifting over the course of an hour. A singer with a good ear and no drone will still slide. A singer with a modest ear and a drone will not.

What is Sa in Indian classical music?
